Speedwerx ECU Maps

Many of you have been anxiously awaiting more information on our Arctic Cat 9000 / Yamaha SideWinder 998 Turbo ECU mapping, and after a considerable amount of dyno and field testing we have some details to share on the three Pump Gas / Trail maps that will be available this season-

RPI-9000-1    Stage 1    Stock Exh.     (220.8 hp*)

RPI-9000-2    Stage 2    91 Octane      (254.2 hp*)

RPI-9000-3    Stage 3    91/110 Blend      (271.6 hp*)

A Knock Light is a standard feature on all of our maps to give you a little more peace of mind and a safety margin should you get some low quality fuel. Extensive work went into the OEM knock detection feature to make this work better in high boost applications so you will have the safest and most reliable system available to give you a little more peace of mind and a safety margin should you get some low quality fuel. It's simply incorporated into the mapping to appear on factory digital display for a true plug and play installation without the need for external lights or wiring scroll down to see a quick vid of it in action.

These maps were developed for Speedwerx by Precision EFI and we have the exclusive rights to market them to consumers, dealers, and performance shops. A Flash Tool for dealers or shops to install the maps in-house on a pay per license arrangement will also be available. Serious tuners can also purchase the Multi-Map Bundle + Dash Upgrade to have the ability to switch maps using the stock digital dash display at any time. Any dealers interested in getting setup to flash ECU’s should contact Doug at 651-982-6020 or dtoepper@speedwerx.com.

RPI-9000-FT    Flash Tool

RPI-9000-MB   Multi-Map Bundle + Dash Upgrade

*Please Note: the horsepower ratings as stated are in hot and humid August air- the Stage 3 will make around 280hp in cool, dry winter air.*

Speedwerx ECU Maps tested at DynoTech Research!

Billy Howard from our Eastern Distributor Howard’s Inc. brought his machine to DynoTech Research where they ran the three maps in addition to the stock baseline and our Stage 1 muffler that does not require an ECU remap- here’s Jim’s write-up with the results and some notes and tech info.

2017 Arctic Cat Thundercat turbo, tested with Precision EFI Stage Tuning and Speedwerx Mufflers

Billy Howard of Howard's Inc Kubota, SkiDoo and Arctic Cat (and Speedwerx distributor) in Coudersport PA brought this low mile stock 2017 Arctic Cat Thundercat turbo to DTR to test Speedwerx mufflers and the anxiously awaited Precision EFI pump gas ECU reflashes. Speedwerx would like to provide this technology to its distributors, dealers and customers, and are working on a marketing plan with Precision EFI.

Sebastien Guay, owner of Precision EFI, spent his early years first doing the Advanced Certification program at EFI University in San Diego, then spent several years in New Zealand working with, and finalizing the development of the VI-Pec standalone EFI system (the preferred standalone used by Hypersports, BMC, D&D, Speedwerx on their X-Games winning supercharged 800 Cat twostroke, and many others). In 2009, Sebastien came back to Canada with fully developed VI-Pecs to market and opened Precision EFI at the Autodrome Saint Eustache racing facility in Quebec, north of Montreal. The facility is set up with a complete fabrication shop, all wheel drive chassis dyno and a fully instrumented engine dyno for building and tuning high end EFI race cars that are run at the Autodrome. They also have a snowmobile chassis fixture for instrumented crankshaft dyno testing like we use at DTR that they use for snowmobile VI-Pec and factory ECU tuning. Today, an important part of Precision EFI's business is marketing/ tuning VI-Pec standalone ECUs in North America and cracking and retuning automotive and powersports ECUs.

These three reflashes were developed first on Precision EFI's fully instrumented engine dyno, then field tested last winter in Canada on Thundercat/ Sidewinder beta test trail sleds. Factory detonation protection is surely adequate for normally aspirated operation, but marginal for boosted operation on pump gas, hence the need for extensive field testing prior to release. Precision EFI has reconfigured the digital dash display to include a knock light that will warn the rider of any possible detonation when operating on occasionally inevitable low octane fuel or in abusive, harsh conditions (scroll to the bottom to see a demonstration video of the knock light). They also have developed an electronic box to be used by distributors/ dealers for installing these totally encrypted reflashes over the internet on a pay per license arrangement.

Billy had with him two Speedwerx stainless quiet mufflers—one 2.25" ID and the other a higher flowing and just slightly louder but easily “trailable” 2.5" ID.  We tested the fuel in the tank with our Zeltex 101C octane/ ethanol % tester, and it was 92.2 R+M/2 octane with 3.3% ethanol.

At the beginning of the test session, the air was hot and humid. The Thundercat EFI will adjust fuel flow to compensate for changes in temperature and barometric pressure, but can't measure humidity with its speed density system. So the water in the air displaces O2 with no change in fuel flow, resulting in slightly richer mixture and reduced HP. Note that the stock fuel curve leans out mixture as revs climb beyond peak HP RPM. Based up on their own winter air dyno testing, Sebastien had expected HP to be closer to 280, and plans to return after optimal cold weather has arrived in WNY. The DTR refrigerated intake air system can provide 1000 cubic feet of dry winter air in August, but our experience using that system on our first preproduction Sidewinder showed the stock intake air thermocouple is too slow to react to the sudden 60F drop in intake air temperature during the 10 second transient dyno test —causing leaner-than normal A/F ratio. We had the same experience with the plastic coated SkiDoo Etec intake air temperature sensors, and now use one with plastic carefully removed exposing the metal element when testing with winter air in summertime. With that, the BUDS shows intake air temperature drops as quickly as our rapid response custom SuperFlow intake air temp sensor.

Leaving the stock ECU in place, we installed the Speedwerx 2.25" muffler. The reduced backpressure allowed a bit more boost pressure that the ECU compensated for-- delivering additional fuel flow. Also, note the Elapsed Time of the first two tests which is virtually identical--critical in ensuring perfect repeatability during transient testing with any dyno. The SuperFlow 902 water brake absorber with new style PID controller gives us this identical rate of engine/ absorber rotor acceleration.

Reinstalling the stock muffler, Sebastien installed a "Stage 1" reflashed ECU. This gave us an extra 1.5 psi of boost, and a nearly 20hp increase over stock with even safer A/F ratio than stock.

Next, a larger but still quiet 2.5" ID Speedwerx stainless muffler was installed with an ECU with Precision EFI Stage II tune. This brought boost up to 14psi, and with still safer-than-stock A/F ratio generated well over 250hp. Note that the Precision tuning eliminates the gradual leaning of mixture as revs climb toward the 9200+ rev limit— something critical when running "out of gear" on the lake and having revs climb toward the rev limiter. Remember the factory deto protection may be adequate at stock HP levels but may lack the extreme, rapid reaction (fuel enrichening and timing retard) necessary to protect the engine properly from detonation at 250+ HP.

Finally, here's the 2.5" Speedwerx muffler with Precision EFI's "Stage III" tune. This adds another two psi of boost and nearly 70hp more than stock on 92.2 octane pump gas! Note the conservative A/F ratio all the way to the rev limiter. And also note the gradual application of boost as revs climb from lower RPM. This boost curve is designed for maximum midrange acceleration at WOT without risking encountering deto that might occur from creating excessive torque (high operating combustion pressure) at low RPM. Remember--detonation is a time-dependant phenomenon so it's wise to keep WOT tuning moderate at low revs, and increase the boost as revs climb. The time-dependant issue explains why we might be able to safely make more HP on pump gas with the high revving, smaller bore triple. Most wise tuners always felt the 250 was the pump gas limit on the Suzuki turbo bigger bore low revving two cylinder (many who have tried to operate the boosted Suzuki twin on pump gas at higher HP levels had to resort in installing heavy head studs to keep quietly detonating engines from lifting the heads and spewing coolant). But the lower torque, higher revving Yamaha triple with less timing advance surely explains its greater pump gas HP output with no signs of detonation.

Update 9/22/17- Since we posted information on our new Arctic Cat 9000 / Yamaha SideWinder 998 Turbo ECU Mapping developed by Precision EFI, one of the most asked about features is the Knock Light since it is something no one else is currently offering for these machines. We are proud to be the first in the industry to offer a Knock Light as a standard feature on all maps at no extra cost. Extensive work went into the OEM knock detection feature to make this work better in high boost applications so you will have the safest and most reliable system available to give you a little more peace of mind and a safety margin should you get some low quality fuel. It's simply incorporated into the mapping to appear on factory digital display for a true plug and play installation without the need for external lights or wiring. Check out this video to see it in action...

10/5/17- Billy Howard from Speedwerx eastern distributor Howard's Inc has been using his own Arctic Cat XF9000 as a rolling test bed on the snow, grass, and on the asphalt like you see here. His full-bodied machine with the basic asphalt setup and the stock engine with only our Stage 3 ECU Flash and Stage 2 Lightweight Muffler (271.6hp @16lbs. boost on pump gas as previously shown at DynoTech Research) runs 9.50 @136mph in the 1/4 mile. In the recent AmSnow Shootout, he ran 5.32 @128mph in the 1/8th mile, good enough for the #5 slot on OSDRA's Crazy 8 all-time quickest in the Pro Mod class. Not too shabby for a pump gas trail sled- keep up the great work Billy!

Speedwerx ECU Multi-Map Bundle + Dash Upgrade

The Multi-Map bundle includes the Stage 1 and 2 pump gas maps, and Stage 3 race gas map, plus a stock power level Economy Map for long range cruising. This is a fully software integrated solution with no additional hardware required other than our Stage 2 Muffler and a Hypershift Clutch Kit to harness the additional power- this enables you to boost your power level up to 280hp on premium pump gas. Also included is a fully adjustable Launch Control with Adjustable Activation, RPM, Boost and Predictive Traction Control- this enables you to electronically dial in your machine to ensure you can get maximum acceleration in varying conditions.

A key part of this package is the Dash Upgrade that allows you to select which of the Maps you want to run and adjust Launch Control right from the the diagnostic menu on factory instrument panel- you can go from mild to wild at the push of a button in just a matter of seconds!. As with all of our ECU maps, this also includes an integrated Knock Light with Active Boost Trim for your peace of mind should you get some poor quality fuel. A Boost Gauge that reads the boost pressure in both a bar gauge and a large numerical format, and a feature that records peak boost and top speed during a run is also included, and an AFR gauge is coming soon as well (this will require an additional AFR module package to be viewable). New for '22, all 2019+ models with electronic suspension can now have separately adjustable front and rear settings and different driver settings can be stored in memory, even for 2019 models originally equipped with unified settings.

Speedwerx L2 Series Stage 2 Lightweight Muffler

Our TIG welded 304 Stainless Steel muffler is a must-have for the new 998 Turbo models. After extensive testing, we are seeing an awesome 23hp gain over stock, with a nice 8lb weight loss as well! This muffler bumps up the boost slightly and leans out the air-fuel ratio, so ECU remapping is required to ensure long term reliability. Even though this is our L2 (Light and Loud) version, the sound level is reasonably low. Much like the similarly designed mufflers we have for the 1100 Turbo models, it is louder than stock but the turbo itself does a lot to help quiet it down to a tolerable level for everyday trail riding.

For a nice boost in power without needing an ECU remap, check out our Stage 1 muffler that makes 15hp over stock with no other changes required!

Stock vs. Stage 2 Muffler comparison (only the muffler was changed, the ECU is stock- remapping will add more power and speed)

Stock Muffler- 105mph at 8600rpm

Stage 2 Muffler- 113mph at 8980rpm!

Speedwerx Lightweight TEAM BOSS / ADAPT Helixes

Our TEAM BOSS /ADAPT Helixes are machined in-house- we shave off excess material to save .10lbs over the stock helixes without compromising strength or durability. These helixes are available in both Electronic Reverse (2-Stroke) and Standard (4-Stroke) designs.

We offer three types of cuts on these helixes-

Straight Cut- these helixes maintain the same angle for the entire length of the ramp.

Compound Cut- these helixes are progressive on the first section of the ramp and have a straight angle on the end of the ramp. In each part number (ex. 59-43.36), the final number (.36) indicates the length of the first part of the ramp where it progresses from the first angle (59°) to the second angle (43°).

Progressive Cut- these helixes progressively change from the starting angle to the ending angle down the whole ramp.

The advantage to the compound radius is that it will typically back shift quicker for snow cross or tight twisty trail riding. The starting angle is always steeper at first for quicker acceleration, then progressively changes to the lesser angle so that the clutches don’t over shift and bog down the motor so you retain excellent top speed.

Custom angles are also available for $199.95 - please call us at 651.982.6020 (leadtime varies).

Speedwerx H5 Alloy Clutch Springs

Don't forget clutch springs as a normal part of your maintenance program! They take a lot of abuse, but are often one of the most overlooked parts in the whole performance equation. Our exclusive H5 Alloy springs are offered in our Hypershift Clutch Kits, and are also available separately for many applications.

For many years, Speedwerx had worked very hard to set the bar in performance clutch kits utilizing titanium springs. The springs and clutch kits worked perfectly, but the prices were getting higher due to the rising cost of titanium. After two years of rigorous testing, we introduced the H5 Alloy springs in 2008. The H5 Alloy springs have a 30,000 to 40,000 psi higher tensile strength compared to standard chrome silicon wire springs and they won't lose rate over time, so you can get the durability and consistent performance of a titanium spring at a fraction of the cost- they even have a 5 Year Guarantee against breakage. The H5 Alloy springs have set the new standard in performance for trail, mountain, and racing applications!

Speedwerx Panel Vent Kits

Our vent kits install on the front side of the panels to draw cool air across the clutches and exhaust, and out the rear where the panels have venting molded in from the factory. They are made from laser cut aluminum for durability and look good with a Black Anodized frame backed with stainless steel mesh to keep the snow out. Kit comes complete with rivets and installation instructions.
